Ambassador: Russia offering Armenia a wide range of nuclear power  units

ArmInfo. Russia is offering Armenia a wide range of nuclear power units - from large reactors to  small modular NPPs. Russian Ambassador to the Republic of Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin announced this during a meeting with the management of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant on May 14.

"As far as I know, the Russian side has proposed options for the  entire range, including detailed justification and considerations for  implementation of both large reactors and for small modular stations.   And there is no need to say that Russia has unique jurisdiction here,  with a floating station  already in operation," the diplomat said.

According to the Ambassador, a more comprehensive proposal would be  for the Armenian side to accept the proposal for a large-capacity  unit. "We are ready for different options, depending on the choice of  the Armenian side. And there are no questions here," Sergey Kopyrkin  noted.

In October of last year, the director of the Armenian Nuclear Power  Plant Movses Vardanyan reported that, according to the current  situation, only the Russian side has submitted a proposal to  construct a new station.  The initiative package consists of 11  volumes. The director of the ANPP emphasized that there is a  comprehensive plan in place for the location of the new NPP, allowing  for the construction of two 1200 MW units. The cost of the first unit  will be slightly higher than the second unit. Vardanyan noted that  the issue of cooling water for the reactor could be addressed by  constructing 4 cooling towers, each 220 meters tall for the first  unit and for the second unit. If the decision is made, a significant  amount of  construction materials produced domestically will be  required.
