ArmInfo. The Armenian government will allocate 25.2 million drams to develop a standard design that will allow sand mining at the mouth of the border river Araks. The decision was made at a Cabinet meeting on May 7.
The rationale for the draft decision emphasizes that, alongside the sharp increase in construction volumes in the country, the demand for high-quality construction sand has also increased significantly. However, the characteristics of the alluvial plain of the Araks River and its varied flow patterns require a particularly professional approach, as the riverbed in the vast border plain is constantly subject to deformations, leading to changes in the state's border. In this situation, the primary objective is not only sand extraction but also ensuring the stability of the Araks River channel. There is a need to develop scientifically sound design documentation that takes into account the characteristics of the Araks River alluvial plain and its various flow regimes. This will enable the extraction of renewable sand reserves.
The project also includes the design of a sedimentation basin on the Armavir Canal, where a structure is planned to ensure the sedimentation and extraction of sand and gravel contained in the water flows through the canal. At the same time, the use of a standard design will prevent sand from filling irrigated lands, which will be essential for maintaining the fertility of agricultural lands and the smooth operation of water systems.
