ArmInfo. The Russian Federal Customs Service issued a statement regarding reports of massive traffic jams at the Verkhniy Lars checkpoint on the Russian-Georgian border.
"There is a significant congestion of vehicles in the neutral zone exiting Russia. The passage of trucks has slowed due to the impossibility of accessing the neutral zone due to the slow acceptance of trucks by the adjacent side. More than 450 heavy trucks are waiting to exit at other exit points located near the checkpoint. Currently, there is no queue of passenger cars at the Verkhniy Lars checkpoint," the agency said in a statement on its Telegram channel. It is emphasized that customs authorities on the Russian side are operating normally and are prepared to handle increased workloads. "Over the past 24 hours, customs authorities cleared more than 1,700 passenger vehicles for exit, and more than 8,000 individuals crossed the border, while 1,300 vehicles and more than 5,000 individuals entered," the Russian Customs Service added. In light of the above, the Russian Federal Customs Service has asked carriers and vacationers to consider this information when planning their travel itineraries.
Images of massive queues at the Upper Lars checkpoint on the Russian-Georgian border were previously circulated on social media. Citizens complained of being forced to stand in line for hours, hoping to cross the border. It should be noted that this checkpoint is the only land route connecting Armenia with Russia.
