In the context of the emerging strategic partnership between Armenia and the United States, the energy sector is of particular importance, and the Armenian side highly values the interest of the United States in developing Armenia’s energy system and the region’s energy interconnectivity. Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of the Republic of Armenia Narek Apitonyan stated this during a meeting with a U.S. delegation headed by Paul Hooper, Director of the Energy Supply Chains Office of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Economic, Energy and Business Affairs.
As reported by the press service of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, the discussion focused on steps being taken to strengthen energy security, diversify supplies, enhance system resilience, and introduce energy storage systems. During the meeting, the key elements of the RA energy system strategy, the priorities stemming from the strategy, ongoing programs, steps aimed at reducing risks and introducing energy storage systems, as well as the new energy law adopted by the National Assembly, which will enter into force in December, were presented.
The discussion also touched upon the establishment of a geological service, and details of the competition to select a consultant for its creation were presented. Harutyun Movsisyan, Director of the Republican Geological Fund, presented the need for and prospects of geological research, remote sensing, and the processing of existing data in Armenia within the framework of RA-U.S. cooperation.
The parties also addressed issues related to strengthening the institutional foundations of sectoral cooperation, as well as matters aimed at exchanging international best practices and developing professional competencies.
